HOPING THE BLOGWORLD CAN HELP ME OUT?

Well I am back from Orlando Pride. I had such a great time overall. It's amazing how fast it went, all of it spent with an incredible group of guys. I'll share more with you later about my perspective of Pride this past weekend and include a group of photos.

So here are the main questions I need answered for this Thursday evening's class. I'll need to pull what I have by late Wednesday afternoon to get my presentation done in the evening.

*What adjectives would you use to describe art? (and) What do you think the function/or purpose of art is?
I NEED 10 peoples comments

If you could take a moment to read my post, generate your response to my questions, and then answer the questons, I'd be ecstatic! Be sure to identify who you are, your age, and your state location (minimum). If you have a favorite piece of contemporary art that expresses your adjective and statement, feel free to include the Internet link where it may be found.

I apologize in advance if you see less of me commenting and or posting this week. Part of that is due to me getting acclamated to my new course scheduling this quarter. But know I always miss hering from y'all. Hugs everyone!

I think art is in its simplest form "decorative", but that great art will also be "profound", a way of showing us more than what we see. In this way art is also "interpretive" and "interpreted". I think most artists are attempting to interpret or communicate something they see to the world, but on the other hand the viewer also brings his/her view of the world to the art as a lens through which he/she finds his/her own meaning in the art.

One of the most striking and moving pieces of modern art for me is one of the memorials on the grounds of the concentration camp at Dachau (outside Munich). At one level it is seen as a mass of barbed wire and fence posts. At another it is the tangled mass of emaciated bodies. FYI, the German words below would be tranlsated "Never again!"

Here is a link to a less than idea picture of it:

You have to remember I come from the television side of things in this world, but I do have an eye for composition. To me art is something that catches your eye and can make you think... or raise a question that starts a good discussion. Last weekend I took some pictures trying to be artsy fartsy and they are posted on my blog (see Sunday post). and I would also point you to my Sept 16th post and the black and white photo of Jeff in the window with the street reflections... one of my favorites... and of course the pride pic from the June challenge... Like beauty, are is in the eye of the beholder... feel free to pull any of my photos if you would like and if you need more info on a particular photo, shoot me an email.

I think that art is personal and reflective...

It's purpose is to make you think, make you wonder, make you dream and make you feel something - art does not always have to elicit a positive response from the viewer, but it should elicit SOME emotion - if it doesn't then it is not art in my book.

Am looking for pics that support this and will forward to you later...

Yikes! What a question.

Art is "vital". It is necessary
expression of something that can't be said in blunt words.

I think it was Oscar Wilde who thought art by definition has no function but itself.

However, I think the 'function' of art is to get us more in touch with something inside us.

Art that I like is inspirational and motivational. Not in the organized religion sense, but in the sense that a good piece of art forces me to think about what I could be and it makes me want to strive to achieve my goals. It pushes me beyond my current boundaries.

Although this may not be the art that you were thinking of, my favorite books (books are art, right?) are the original Dune series by Frank Herbert. Whenever I read any of those books, I always come away with a sense that I can do whatever I put my mind to, that I can be better than I am today.

For graphic arts, I prefer paintings and pictures that remind me of peaceful, calming places from my past. I have some pieces in my house that I bought at local arts & crafts fairs, but I don't know the artists' names, so I don't have an example of what they look like. One is a painting of an old fishing house built entirely on pilings over the water near Captiva Island.

Tony,

Art is a lie that makes the truth clearer. (Not original with me, unfortunately, but pretty much my position on the matter.)

At is beautiful (not necessarily in the conventional sense, but rather in a philosophical sense.) Truthful

from Bruce, who is 63, lives in Venice, Italy and doesn't particularly like most contemporary art.

I think art is stimulating. Each individual has his own interpretation of what art is. His reaction to an object, a painting, a structure, is caused from a stimulation of the sences. Art is neccessary as a way for constant stimulation. We are surrounded by it everywhere we go. From billboards to buildings. Life without art would be like living in a dreary fog.

Provocative, stimulating, exotic, reflective are a few descriptors which come to mind.

Art is one of the abilities which separates us from the other animals. It's an outlet to express one's inner psyche.

Good Luck :)

I think art is interpretive. It interprets the artist mood, feelings and how he sees or views the world around him/her.

I think the purpose or function of it is to show the world how someone else may view a particular moment in time, person or place.

The only exapmle I can think is go back to MOMA the video art we saw. That stuff was amazing. Just a clip shown one frame every few seconds, the people in the water, the little postage stamp fly.

You know who and how old.

Art is anything (meaning many medium) that causes us to stop and reflect for a moment at what the artist is trying to say. The message is different for all of us, but it especially effective if it strikes a common cord.

Art also doesn't always match your sofa, or so I've heard. I think perhaps, sometimes it might.

Too many items to mention here.

Woops, forgot about the function. Because works of art give form to what we believe or think of art, they serve as a feeling or belief for culture, or time period. It changes over time and means different things. That show ideas, values, and attitudes from the artist to the one who views it. Person to person, generation to generation.itting ideas, values and attitudes from person to person and from generation to generation. Art forms are essential to engaging in the rituals that serve as the ingredients required to nurture and sustain any society.

I tend to be drawn most to the artistic side of photography. Particularly those of nature such as Ansel Adams or that which evokes a particular place and time in history caught in a timeless photograph. Also, I enjoy the homoerotic art of Tom of Finland.
